How Long Will A New Phone Last

An Estimate On The Average Lifespan Of A Smartphone

When you just buy a new smartphone, it’s a great feeling. Your phone works great, it can multitask with ease and the user interface feels snappy and responsive.

However, as time passes by, your phone starts to become sluggish and battery life seems to decline. Then you begin to wonder, What is the lifespan of your smartphone?

I was facing the same dilemma a few years back. Now I seem to have a pretty good idea about the average lifespan of most phones out there. If you want to know how long your phone will last, you are at the right place. So, let’s get into it:

How long should your phone last?

On an average, a smartphone typically lasts for around 2-3 years. This is just an average estimate and your phone may last a lot longer depending on many different factors.

Which ranges from heat exposure, charging duration to accidental damages. If you take proper care of your device, you can keep using it for a lot more than the average time frame which I mentioned.

What affects a smartphone lifespan?

This is a very common question related to smartphones. There are several different aspects which affect the overall lifespan of a smartphone. These factors includes:

Processor

The most important part of a smartphone is the processor inside the device. If you are an Android user, your device would most likely have a Qualcomm or an Exynos processor.

For an iOS user, your iPhone would have a variant of their bionic SoC inside. If you are looking to get a good phone which will last longer, then you should probably spend more on the processor.

Note- Rule of thumb is to get a smartphone with the latest flagship processor which is currently available in the market.

Battery

Batteries are an integral part of a smartphone. When you are on the lookout for a new smartphone, you should always prioritize getting a device with higher battery capacity.

Nowadays, smartphone manufacturers create devices with a bigger battery such as 4000 mAh, 5000 mAh, 6000 mAh and even higher.

However, do note that having a larger battery equals to the device getting slightly heavier as well. But that is a slight trade off which is pretty reasonable in my opinion.

OS

The operating system of your device will be the primary factor in determining the lifespan of your phone. Most smartphone manufacturers create their own custom variant of Android OS built on top of Stock Android.

For example:- MIUI and Oxygen OS. Pick a device after ensuring that the operating system does not put any major strain on the hardware components of the smartphone. This would be a key factor in determining the lifespan of the device.

What can you do to extend your phone’s lifespan?

There are several different ways to increase the average lifespan of your smartphone. They are extremely easy and require no technical expertise.

Which means that you can keep using your phone for a longer time span. And also make sure that your device is operating at its peak efficiency by following these simple steps:-

Do not fully charge your phone

Yes, you heard it right. We do not recommend fully charging your device. So, no more overnight charging from now on if you want to maintain your phone battery.

A while back, I used to leave my phone on charging overnight as well. I know what I’m suggesting is inconvenient for a lot of you. But hear me out on why it is important.

The lithium ion battery present in your phone suffers slight degradation every time you charge your device. The bad thing about that is it’s not reversible. Not fully charging your device slows down that battery deterioration to an extent.

Install the latest software updates

The easiest thing you can do to ensure optimum performance for your smartphone is to install the latest software updates. Your device manufacturer would consistently release updates for your device till a certain time.

Generally, you will stop receiving major software updates after 3 years. Until then you should keep your phone updated with the latest security patches and firmware updates.

Get a screen protector for your phone

Always have a screen guard on your phone. I lost most of my previous phones not due to obsolescence but due to screen shattering. Keep a good screen protector on your device at all times.

If someone told me this earlier, I would be able to save some of my old phones. Also, keep your smartphone in a good phone case. It is recommended to pick the phone case of the same brand as your device.

This is because your device manufacturer would have a better idea about the overall dimensions of your phone. Which in turn would allow them to create a phone case which offers sufficient protection against damages.

Keep your phone insured

This is an optional tip. It is completely up to you if you want to get insurance cover for your device. If you have a little money to spare, you should get an insurance plan for your phone.

Always go for an insurance plan which at least covers theft and accidental damages for your smartphone. I do know that if you just bought a new phone, it would be under warranty.

But most warranties only cover manufacturing defects and accidental damages. Phones being stolen do not come under warranty hence it is recommended to get insurance if you have an expensive device.

Conclusion

That is how you can keep your device in prime working conditions for a long period of time. These are the methods you can use to extend the lifespan of your smartphone.

It doesn’t matter if you have a new device or an older one, these methods would work just fine for you. If you liked this post, make sure you share it with your friends.
